I've got four one month old chicks. I'd like to start giving them treats other than yogurt. Is this an alright time to start? The only small grit I can find is high calcium parakeet grit, which I'm assuming is a big no-no. When are chicks generally old enough for larger adult grit? What about 3 month old Silkies? Is the adult grit alright for them?

I give mine playsand (not the kind with silica). I try not to give them too many treats but when I do, I put sand in a dish for them. TSC also sells very small grit but I try to avoid that place. Have you tried giving them scrambled eggs? That is a really fun thing to watch! I don't like the thought of them having butter or margarine so I cook the egg in the microwave. One egg whisked well in a bowl, microwave 32 seconds, let cool. If the egg is not fully cooked, I give it a few more seconds. I chop it up a little for them too

No problem and they won't need grit

Boiled eggs are fun too, I peel them and leave them whole, it's fun to watch them going at that egg! I think it entertains them too.

We have 3 one month olds also. They love summer squash (cut in half lengthwise), watermelon is the favorite so far though. I offer a dish full of sand in their run. It's just construction sand we had left over. Sometimes they eat it, sometimes they just stand and scratch. They will take what they need.
