my roosts are true 2x2s so they have pretty sharp right angles. is this a problem for the bird's feet? do i need to round the edges out?

Over time it might cause issues, but in the short time I doubt you'll notice anything. Many people use 2x4's laid on the flat side for roosts. If you can't do that and are going to stick with the 2x2's then just take the edge off with some sand paper. They don't have to be round. Hope that helps you.

Its not a killer of a problem. All though most now use 2x4s flat, large branches or other rounded perches it really isn't a must be. My grandfather's chicken house used 2x2s and they worked for the hens. Chickens do grasp the perch when they sleep. Two inches is enough to support their weight and within their grasp. Now when I came up the 2x2s had been rounded by wear and maybe they were more comfortable on them then the sharp edges of new 2x2s. So taking a little of the edge off wouldn't hurt.
