Do they seem to end up with a lot of feed on the floor? Or is there a lip that keeps them from scratching the feed out of it? I would like to use a wall mount type feeder in my coop (a couple of these) when it's done. A larger capacity type thing, not a rabbit type feeder with the grate underneath (I do have those for my rabbits.) I've seen some posts from people who use these, I'm just wondering if a lot ends up on the floor using these types of feeders for your chickens.

Thanks for any input!

Yes. In fact, I think more ends up on the floor than is eaten.

But that may just be me... I keep my chicken in a rabbit hutch that has a wire floor and all the poop falls into the tray below, but so does the food. The tray is filled all the way to the top (from the bottom of the tray to the wire floor) so she can reach the food that has fallen now. I used to have a frisbee under it to catch some of the feed. Maybe it works for some people but definetly not for me...

For us, it works.

I don't find an inordinate amount of food under or around the feeders, but we have a solid floor, so it may be that the girls peck it off the floor.

The height of the feeders may help, too. Ours are hung at the height of the girls' backs, and it does seem to help keep them from messing about in it too much.

Also, there's an adjustable panel that you can lower to keep less food in the tray of the feeder, which also may help.

Honestly, though, I haven't found a single feeder or waterer yet that our girls wouldn't make a hellacious mess of if given half a chance, so I think it's probably a matter of getting the feeder with the best combination of must-have features for your particular flock.
