I have finally gotten enough grass etc for all 3 runs and my dlm project is complete. No smell or flies and it stays fairly dry. My question is this: in this hot humid OK summer, will it get too hot in the run for them? I spritz it down a bit when it gets very hot and they dig down to the ground to lay in. I place “cooling stations” of soda bottles filled with frozen water and some pans with ice to stand in (for the brave/smart chooks).

No it won't be hot for them. DL is not like a big deep compost pile that generates heat. I'm in hot & humid NC and use DL.

Well, it can be...depends on ingredients, depth, and moisture...
....but this doesn't sound like a hot load if it's dry grass.

Dry grass weeds twigs will add leaves this fall. Like I said I do wet it a bit every afternoon and fluff and flip it around every two mornings. I just do not want a burning pile that they will live on. It is probably about 4 inches deep right now.

I wouldn't bother wetting it...dry plant matter is perfect for decomposing the poops.
