I got 2 bantam chickens today.

They havent layed an egg today. My question is that I have class on weekdays from 6am-3pm. If my chickens lay an egg during that time and I cant come home till 3 to check for eggs will they still be good for eating, or will they have gone bad in that time. I would have no way of knowing if they were layed at 6:05 or 2:59. So say up to eight hours would be the mas they could be stitting in the nesting boxes.

Anyone know?

Thanks

They would be fine. I'm to picky to let mine stay out there that long & normally check every 2-3 hours but I have known guys to not gather for 2 or 3 days & eat them. If you drop a egg in a hot skillet & the yoak breaks then the egg is not fresh or that is what my grandpa used to tell me.

I can say that every bad egg that I had try to eat the yoke busted in the pan & I have never had one with a solid yoke taste old.

Im still learning myself about the eggs and all, but i have heard people say that they sometimes dont even refrigerate their eggs, that they leave them out on the counter for several days instead, i have never tried it though.

It was on here or a link from this board about keeping eggs. Other countries (France for one) most people do not refrigerate their eggs. It seems eggs can last weeks if not months without refrigeration. Really neat article if you can find it.

So.....you do not have to worry about hours, just days (or maybe weeks)

We never refrigerated out howm grown eggs when I was little, mom just lined the cartons up on a shelf. She always kept store bought ones in the fridge tho, like they werent as good and might spoil or something.
