I brought a few new chickens home once who had mites, as I later discovered. They all started pulling out their feathers, starting with their tail. Treated with sevin dust and all is well now.

Boutulism - Causes feathers to be removed/pulled/plucked easier as well. Read it here on BYC....just don't remember the thread...
