Questions about a Tom and a Hen!

Hi, I'm new here. I own a 9 month old tom who I raised from 5 weeks. Recently, his chicken friend was rehomed due to arguments, so we got him a hen. She is 7 months old and I was told should be laying soon. He displays and such, and she lays down with me and near my lap, but never for him. When she does lay down, he shows interest in her but instead of mounting her he bites her head. And hard. She squeals and runs away usually. She has some bruising on her head from the bites and I'm wondering if this is his attempt to get her to mate or if he's just being a jerk?

could be he's a jerk.

but he's also young and hasn't got his Rico suave moves down.

I've seem them mate with the wrong end or keep falling off the hens back.

when the hen is ready she will lays and give him several opportunities. she is young as well. my young hens usually don't lay til the following spring.
