Questions About Campbell Broodiness

I have 5 hens and 1drake of KCs and they were a year old this past June...at that tim 3 of them went broody and were setting....stealing all the eggs in the pen...we have 5 Rouen hens, too....and they built a huge mound nest and all 3 set on them, but they kept fighting over which portion of the mound they could set on...it was our mistake, but it was our first experience with them and was under the impression that they were rarely broody. Well, needless to say none hatched, but we had 1 hen that set from the very beginning until we busted up the mound. There are a couple of them in my avatar, but I don't have any other colors. I know it isn't exactly what you were asking, but just thought that I would share my experience with them. I really do like them and will always have some included with my mixed flock...they are great layers too.

It's always nice to hear more anecdotes about them. I'm thinking about swapping my muscovy ducks for a breed that lays more and sits less. We don't want our flock of 4 turn into a flock of 26 for half a summer.

However, the occasional hatch might be nice. Ideally, I'd like perhaps 3 duck hens of which maybe 1 sits once a year.

Also, I'd love to get eggs in the winter when the chickens stop laying. I've read conflicting accounts whether ducks stop laying in the winter or not.
