so, I post questions here from time to time and often folks are really helpful, so thank you all for helping out.

Today, Whitebeard, one of my Pekin ducks, who is about 8 months old, there up. She has done it before in the past while in a car, but I had chocked that up to motion sickness and from picking her up. She has done it probably twice before. Today, though, I didn’t pick her up and she wasn’t under any stress. She hadn’t just eaten, but was mellow and napping until she just stood up walked around a bit and puked up water with bits of a lime green substance. She had some
Bluberries last night but otherwise hasn’t eaten anything strange that I know of. She seems otherwise fine and I gave her some probiotics in her water. But I’ve read a bunch of posts now on here that suggest she could be sick. She’s not losing weight, and honestly I cannot understand how anyone could ever tell that a duck had diarrhea because my ducks have always had runny or unpredictable poop since they hatched—it always seems to depend on how much water they have drank and whether they had leafy snacks or mealworms or mostly dry food. I honestly cannot say their poop has ever been consistent. Sometimes it’s smells awful, sometimes no smell at all, and sometimes it comes out like water and other times more solid form. That said, how do I tell if she’s sick? She just seems to be acting like her normal self, but she vomited randomly. She had always had a slight wheeze since she was a duckling, but there’s never anything stuck in her nostrils. A vet said once that she might just breath that way and it didn’t seem concerning. She lays an egg a day and seems to be going through a partial molt if that’s relevant.

If anyone has any insight as to how I might be able to tell if she is sick, whether vomiting is ok, and how to know if a duck has diarrhea, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

It sounds like she may have a respiratory infection. Still, it’s a good sign if she is still acting fairly normal and laying eggs. What are you feeding? Would it be possible to administer antibiotics?

Thanks for your response. When I had her checked by a vet before because of her wheeze, she said that she didn’t see signs of realities distress or anything like that, but thought maybe she just sort of coos like that. She has had watery poop now, more watery than normal, but she did drink a lot of water with probiotics. I could bring her in to a vet for antibiotics. I just don’t know if I should or not.

The reason I suggest antibiotics is whatever issues she has going on seem to be internal, meaning this would probably be the best option to help her body fight infection. Would a vet be possible? I understand they are very expensive.

I can definitely bring her in. It is very expensive, but my little Whitebeard is very important. I just hate to do it when it’s not necessary, as she seems eager to eat treats, drink water and come sit in my lap. If I hadn’t seen her throw up, I’d think all is well.

I care deeply about my ducks as well. Yes, her vomiting up that green fluid is the only thing making me think antibiotics are needed.
