Ive been raising layer hens for years i buy cracked corn in 1 ton super sacs for $300 i ferment in a four bucket cycle. On 4th day i mix and drain off then mix at 3: 1 ratio 3 corn 1 egg layer pellets. This brings up the protien in the corn and pellets dont have the moiture or time to swell. Frementing the corn brings the protien up by 2 to 12 percent depending on the corn itself. I feed them first thing in the morning usually gone in the first half hour then i have feeders in each coop with dry crumbles with the dewormer herb mix. My hens seem pretty happy. Happy girls lay more eggs.1. Homemade feed is almost never cheaper and it can be tough to get right. Making homemade feed is not recommend in most situations because of that and how expensive it is. You can ferment pretty much any feed though
2. Most people offer a certain amount of fermented feed once or twice a day and have dry feed available free choice. A few do feed entirely fermented in which case you would experiment and see what amount leaves you with almost no leftovers. I do reccomend having dry food available though as chickens naturally eat a little bit throughout the day
