Hi,

I need some advice please! My friends 2 geese have a really bad lice problem and her male goose started limbing and now he can't walk! They think it's because they took them off the starter feed at eight weeks. Too Early! She called the vet and they told her to give him oyster shells. She didn't have any oyster shells so she gave him dried milk instead. Is milk OK for geese? And will he walk again?

I don't know much about geese but I do know a lot about ducks!

Thank you!
Rachelle

I have never had a goose get lice. Is this person making sure they have plenty of fresh water to drink and fresh water to bathe in?
If the one can not walk they will need niacin or brewers yeast added to the waterfowl pellets. Dried and non active. You purchase brewers yeast that you sprinkle on the food. If this person does not have this they can use human peas because they have a lot of niacin in them. But they need to get these geese on it A.S.A.P.

Thank you so much for the advice! I emailed her what you said. This was her reply.

My geese have plenty of fresh water they have one 5 gal water, one 1 gal water, a big swimming hole to drink out of, and a huge bucket of water. For several weeks I have had Gander on Brewers yeast but it didn't seem to make a difference. Actually the second day he had that problem I put him on it.

Gander is her male goose that can't walk.

Taking them off of the starter feed was just fine. I only feed waterfowl grower feed for 3 weeks on our goslings and slowly change them over to adult waterfowl feed. There have been many people this year having goslings that have stopped walking. It is because they are not getting the proper amount of niacin. I always feed a waterfowl feed because it has what waterfowl need in their food. When using other forms of feed I have noticed that people who are not using the waterfowl feed are having troubles with the goslings stop walking. Just something I have noticed when people feed un medicated chick starter. I do not believe it has the same nutritional value.
