Hi All,
I'm going to be bringing home some japanese quail hatchlings later this week to be my new backyard pets. I've never kept birds, but my boyfriend has raised pretty much any type of bird you could think of, so we're pretty good in terms of knowing how to care for them.
I just have a quick question about food. I can get Purina game bird mash around here, but I'd prefer not to feed purina if at all possible. I'd also really like to avoid feed coming from other big ag. companies as well (cargill, etc.) because one of the main reasons I'm starting a backyard flock is to avoid supporting industrial ag. as much as possible.
My question then is this: Are there any alternatives to feeding a commercial diet? If not, does anyone deal with smaller feed companies or even get feed direct from a farmer? I live in MD, near DC in a pretty urban area, but there are definitely more rural areas around and I'm not opposed to driving.
Thanks for any advise anyone can send my way!
