I have several ?'s. I have 9 week old chickens. I give them the medicated crumbles with the chic grit with access to it all the time. I give them a little plate every morning of yogurt, cottage cheese, raw oatmeal, and fruit. Then I sprinkle sunflower seeds to bring them in at night. My ?'s are:

1- What age do you start worming. I've been reading alot of these posts, and I'm alittle confused. If cayenne pepper will worm your chickens and prevent this coccidiosis. should you not just give them the cayenne pepper, and do you give it to them daily?

2-I've seen than you can give them vitamins a,c & k. Should you just do this when they are sick or daily or weekly basis? How much to give and how often?

3-Can I sprinkle just regular bird seed in their enclosed run just to give them something to scratch at?

4-What is AC and DE? I've seen it listed in several posting and don't have a clue as to what it is. I think I saw that you put the AC in their water. Can't remember what the DE was for.

5-Can I give them the yogurt everyday. They absolutely LOVE it.

I know it's alot of ?'s, but we're new to chickens. We just want them to be healthy and happy little chickens.
Thanks for your help.

Ok, so reading this post I have a couple of questions too!

Please tell me what gut flora is?

Also the yogurt... what does it do? (Besides provide a yummy good time for the harem)

Apple cider vinegar please advise what this is good for?

What is the science on these?

I have not been giving my girls any of this stuff... does that mean that they have worms, bad gut flora and other harmful stuff?

I would like to know about the yogurt, also. 25 total and give it once a least once a week with a little dry cat food mixed in and ACV in the water daily. Layer crumbles and what is left over from supper or garden. They usually get a treat of some kind every day. Too much?

If it's too much, they won't eat it, is my experience. Which for us is they leave some grass clippings uneaten. Everything else, every day, goes down the hatch and comes out as eggs! (and poo).

My Silkies are 2 weeks old this past Monday. When do I start the plain yogurt and how much and of course how often. I will be purhasing ACV this weekend and need to know about the yogurt. I have seven chicks. Thank you dianer29

Everyone has gut flora. It is the bacteria that lives in your intestinal tract. There is good flora and bad flora. Live culture yogurt and apple cider vinegar encourage the growth of GOOD flora and discourage the growth of pathogens (BAD flora).

Remember that immunity starts in the GUT. Good gut flora means a strong immune system.
