Hello,
I have a female coturnix quail who has both eyes shut appears to have discharge. Also looking very droopy and nor eating. I have isolated her and need to know what remedies to use and how contagious this may be to rest of flock? Advice greatly appreciated.

Possibly egg bound?? Have the quail been in a fairly warm place? If not I'd put her in a container in a hot steamy bathroom. This often helps.

If not egg bound you may need to find an antibiotic.

Hard to tell. I don't treats cots with antibiotics as the time it takes to heal them is temporary and they end up getting sick again. Quail are pretty hardy. How old is she, what are you feeding her? How many other birds do u have?

I have quail occasionally attack each others eyes, that is the symptoms they exhibit, subdued, hiding in the corners, eyes swollen and oozing. I treat by isolation in very clean sand or wire for the floor, and pure coconut oil on the eyes 3 or 4 times a day, it helps keep tissues moist as it heals, Is antibacterial and soothes the pain in the eye. I even use it in my own eyes. It is amazing how it helps the little quails eyes, i had one a couple months ago whos eyelid was pecked almost completely off, i thought her eye was gone and almost put her down, but within one day of starting coconut oil the swelling was down and it had stopoed oozing, her eye was better in 4 or 5 days. I hope thats all it is with your bird and not an illness. Let us know how she does too.
