Hello so I started off with 6 birds. 4 chickens and 2 ducks. Now I have 2 chickens and 1 duck. It’s sad and strange how quickly my other three died. One chicken died today. She was fine when I put them to bed. Idk what happened and I would like to know so if there’s anything I can do to help prevent these quick deaths I can

They are a year old. We got the chickens at family farm and home. When they arrived it was nice and sunny but then there was a terrible cold that took out one of my babies. I live in Grand rapids Michigan. We use a shed for them. It has straw and shelves for them to perch on. No I have never had poultry before.

Could you possibly post a picture of the shed? Where did you find the ones who had died, did any act like they weren't feeling good before dropping? and like the other poster said, did they have any injuries or wounds when you found them?

Did they have any injuries or show any signs of illness?
the one who died first, my barred rock from the cold had yellow pastey stuff from her vent and clear fluid from her nostrils. My pekin duck, was very tired and almost a sleepy like state, and my recent chicken was totally fine yesterday until I saw her this morning. They all died pretty quick

I sent a pic, the ones that died, 2 in the shed and 1 in the house cause I was trying to help her. The others I had no idea they would die and didn't realize so soon. My duck and other chicken showed signs of illness and discomfort. My duck kept wanting to go to the pool. No wounds or injuries that I saw.

I wouldn’t get chicks at any feed stores like TSC because they’re known for not taking the best care of the chicks and I’ve read so many horrible stories about people buying chicks from TSC and they die. I’d suggest buying from a reputable hatchery or a reputable breeder in your area. Just be careful of dirty breeders as they’ll sell cheap, disease carrying chicks.

It's a bit unusual for 1 year old bird to die suddenly like this - my first instinct was that they were ill from the symptoms but since they were raised fine for a year and then died shortly after moving maybe they ate something they weren't supposed to. It looks like they have access to everything in the shed from machine grease to rat poison.
Call the place that sold them to you or even better go look at their flock. If their flock is doing well then it might be the temperatures or something they found in the shed.
Try to figure out what is causing this. Maybe keep them in a fenced off area and sweep the floor first in case there was rat poison or weed killer or whatever else spilt on the floor.
