I got this egg yesterday. It's very rough like sand paper and the color is way off for my girls. I have a 1 or 2 the lay from time to tinge with a few bumps, one that occasionally lays thin shells. But color wise I only have 1 that lays with the brown color spotted on this egg and her only issue is an occasional fart egg. All my hens have been laying 1-2 years give or take and are about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 years old. I have 1 18-19w pullet but she isn't showing signs of laying yet. I figured this was my brown layers egg due to the color and i know she was in the nest that day but didn't get her normal egg, but i figured I'd ask.

Do you think one of my older girls laid a fluke or do I have a new layer?

There is 1 forth from the left in the front that has some dark speckled but it's a different tint in the main color and never as fully covered as the sandpaper egg.

I'm not worried about the texture (unless I get another one soon) it's more just the color. I get flukes from time to time but even my color flukes I can usually tell whos egg it is.

They are on organic grower 17% protein and osyter shell both free choice eggs have been pretty normal except some have started molting and production is dropping for winter. Treats when offered are meal worms maybe a hand full 1-2 a week or less. Lettuce of left over on rare occasions, like 2-3 times a month at most and left over fruit or veggies usually less then once a week if at all

If the egg is small or medium then I would say it's from a new chicken but by going by your pictures it looks like it is a older hen that has been laying for a while.
I sell tons of eggs and I get some that look like that from my girls. The bumps are just calcium and it is still a good egg, If you wash the egg with a scrubber most of it will come off. The egg color is normal for brown egg layers, They don't always lay the same shade of eggs all the time. Hope this helps!

Yeah i figured it was just a fluke. It was really just the color that has me second guessing as my brown layer has always been really consistant. But i know she was in the nest that day and I just got this rather then her usual.

You know of 14 hens that I've raised up so far I've only had one or 2 lay a fart egg first and only another 3 or 4 hens lay smaller full eggs that got bigger as they laid. Most of my girls first eggs have been full or nearly full size from day 1. So no I'm not always looking for small eggs for my first time layers, I look for personality and apperance changes in my girls, and any egg of unexpected apperance or unusual counts at collecting.

But like i said my pullet isn't acting like she's ready, and I knew my older hen had been in the nest that day. The calcium deposits happen I want worried about that. Like i said it was just the coloring that had me second guessing
