He probably sprained it or pulled a muscle or tendon jumping down from a high roost or something else high up. This happens to heavy breeds and I have lowered their roosts inside their house to eliminate the problem, especially with my Barred Rocks...so far so good. I normally recommend that a hen be caged for rest and relaxation giving time for the injury to heal because if they are up walking around, it's possible to make the injury worse. It's tough to cage a rooster for rest and relaxation, they want to be with their hens. If your roo doesnt mind being caged for R&R, add some vitamin B complex in his egg for about 5 days, it might help heal his injury sooner. You can buy the vitamin B complex at a pharmacy, crush a couple of the tablets into powder and sprinkle it in his eggs, let him eat. See if there's improvement by letting him out of the cage the 5th day, if not, continue another 5 days then stop the vitamin B complex treatment. These type injuries take time to heal...a week, months or never. I hope he heals quickly.
