Quick question: is the city/county responsible for driveway culverts?

Just as an added thought... I don't know if you can add screens on them but if I had to have one... I would look into it. Years ago I had a shepard who chased a raccoon in there and got stuck and I couldn't find her... she got so wedged she suffocated and died and then 3 miserably hot summer days led me to her...or the smell.

The guy said something about us buying it and them installing it, I guess I'm gonna have to wait till tomorrow to see what they say. I just hope culverts aren't too expensive, I'm worried about that! Thanks for the replies, I'll post tomorrow to let you all know what they say...(that is, if anyone wants to know!)

My neighbor installed his own drainage saying he was tired of waiting on the city/county.

Question?

Why are all you folks having to put in these culverts? Why weren't they the responsibility of the person you bought your land/home from? True, the house may not have been there before, but the LAND was... I'm confused. And, wouldn't something like that, a 'thing' that must be done by the new owner... isn't that supposed to be mentioned during the buying part of things? Just curious, haven't been here before so it doesn't hurt to know for when the time comes!

Also, just how the heck does anyone make anyone else responsible for rain? That's a goofy one right there.

We're outside city limits, so if I hadn't called the county myself no one would have known that we don't have a culvert.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that the city will pick up and install the culvert for free, as well as putting one load of gravel on top of it at the end of our driveway and digging out the ditch, no cost to me. The bad news is I have to buy the culvert, to the tune of $370....

If only I'd kept my dern mouth shut....

Out in the country if the original owner splits the land one may get the road access to the land and the person that buys the other half may have nothing. Or the land has been vacant for so long without maintaining the culvert/drive (in our case). We were able to put in a new one on down the property line at county's expense at the time. We do get frowned upon when we get a gully washer and the rain flows off of our property onto the gravel road.

cjeanean, kinda figured you would have to buy the culvert. That really is not a bad price, but how long is it?

$600 here. The first one is on you here but the county replaces them when needed.

I have a half moon driveway. one outlet is at the top of a hill an didnt need one an the other did an we have one there that is twice as long as most so we can get the trailers in an out.

I was told by the city I have to buy the metal culvert which is 12 x 24. The cost is $18 per foot which for me total $432 for the culvert.
