how warm do 2 week-old chicks need to be? how hot should the brooder be?

Generally around 80-85 degrees.

Watch the chicks behavior. If they pile up and huddle under the heat source, they are to cold.
If they escape to the outer edges of the enclosure away from the heat source. To hot.
They are also pretty loud to let you know they are displeased In either of these situations.
Put the food and water away from the heaT source.
