Ok we are building bachelors quarters for our extra Roo. I want something he can be confined in with a small around of run space. He will be allowed out in a fenced in field but on ucky days or night time I want him to have his own safe space where he will not get torn up.

We were looking at some coops that were 2 stories. Coop with perch and food above and a small fenced in safe place underneath. How much space would one good sized rooster need for this type of set up. It would be located inside the fenced in area for a bit of extra protection right beside the main coop. If this one works then our other rooster may get his own quarters too so my hens get a break. suggestions or space requirements would be greatly helpful

I would give him 4 to 6 feet inside if you can - for like you said icky days.

I keep some of my bachlors in the horse pasture also - great help with fly control.

I guess it depends on how much time you think he would actually be confined (during the day). If you think that pretty much every day he will be out, you could get by with a lot less space. But if you think that, realistically, he may be confined about 50% of the time, that would different. Ideally, you'd want 10 sq. ft. of run space for him. But that's not going to happen in the type of shelter you're talking about (housing top level/wired run beneath). Well, actually a little 3 x 3 shelter like that would give plenty of space between the upper and lower parts. The trap door, feeders and waterers would take up some space. But something like that should work well, and be easy to build.
