I have a 1x6x8 cut in half along with strips of 1x1 that are 6" long. Now... do I glue the strips onto the 1x6 or do I screw them on? I know that may seem like a 'no-brainer', but I'm not sure which I'm supposed to do. Computer tech and all... not good at construction.

Seems glue wouldn't hold as well but would be better on chicken feet.

Seems screws would hold better but might cut chicken feet.

Short screws, properly used, wouldn't cut the chickens' feet. If you're pushing the drill hard enough, the heads of the screws will sink slightly below the surface of the wood.

As for glue, it depends what type you use, but there are quite a few that will hold well. Liquid Nail, for instance.

Screws can't cut feet if they're installed correctly...screw heads flush with the surface of the wood.

Definitely screw. I used glue on something on my coop, a little block of wood to be a window handle/pull, and the cold in the winter did it in and it fell off. I would sink some screws. If you split the wood doing this, you will need to drill pilot holes first. Also be sure that your screws aren't so long they come out the back side. It will be pretty easy and will only take 10 minutes tops. You got this!

You'll want to drill and countersink clearance holes in the cleats/strips before screwing them to the board(which is actually only 5 1/2" wide)or the cleats will likely split.
I'd use 1 1/4" dry wall screws...2 screws per cleat.

I'll just re-use this same post. How is the roosting 2x4 supposed to go?

Especially colder weather flat is better. It lets them hide their feet underneath and keep them warm while sleeping.
My girls like flat perches, I ran 1/2" radius on the edges with a router to make it smoother and easier for their claws. But that way they can walk on the perch easier and jumping up and down gives more platform.

There is much speculation and debate about roost shape....
.....just put it the way you want it.
I prefer flat to keep toes better covered in winter.
