this is a rather open ended question, as everyone before me said, it depends on the breed and scale that you are raising them at, and as always there are dozens of other factors that need to be considered. Sinced the book is about micro-farming i'm going to assume that your raising them for meat production you'll want to focus on a fast growing large breed like kings or texas pioneers, if you do a search on here or google you can find a alot of good posts. raising pigeons for meat is a little different than raising them for other reasons, at least thats what i've heard. As for difficulty taking care of pigeons in general are pretty easy, and breeding is alot easier than alot of birds, since they hatch and raise they're own young.
