I'm looking for a quiet and heat tolerant breed. I have two Ameraucana bantams that are feathering out right now, and I wanted to add a few more chickens to my up and coming flock. I LOVE my Ameraucanas, and would totally get a few more wheaten ones if I could find them!

Quiet and docile is at the top of the must list -- we live in a suburban neighborhood -- but really, heat tolerant is right up there, too, as we live in Clovis, where summer temps are regularly at 105+.

Two breeds I'm considering: Salmon Faverolles and Australorp.

Advice? Input? Thoughts?

I've got 3 Australorps and they've done well in the heat. It has been up to 110 in the part of the yard where they live. So far they are quiet, but they are only six weeks old. We got them via a lady who has been raising Australorps here in Vegas for several years. They seem to do fine as long as they have shade and water. Our three are docile, though they don't really like to be picked up.

Ours also have a mister system because my BF is a maniac. :)

Andulsans, brahmas, campines, RIRs, silkies, buttercups, australorps, EEs/ameracanas and sumatras all do well in heat. However, the only friendly and quiet of these are australorps, EEs/ameracanas silkies and brahmas.

Best of luck to you!!

x2 on the Black Australorps. They are very gentle, docile birds and very heat tolerant (consider the temps. of the Australian outback where many of them are raised). I raised them in California where temps. commonly reached 117-118 F in the summer (123 F once) and they did just fine. In addition, they are great layers of large, brown eggs.

Wow, that's crazy hot! Were they quiet? My only concern is that some have said that their Australorps can have loud egg songs. Was this an issue for you?

Almost every breed can have a loud egg song. I've heard australorps can be loud but I have three hens of three different breeds who are all loud when it comes to eggs.

Actually, Australorps are some of the quietest chickens I've had (the only standard breed that I've had that I could probably say for sure was quieter were Light Brahmas), and while the Australorps would cluck loudly when they laid an egg, so have my other breeds.
