My chickens are only 12 weeks old and all pullets or hens that have not yet started laying eggs yet. So I do not have a rooster in my flock of nine. They are very quiet and are rarely heard unless something scares them like me with the sprinkler or bringing something big or breakfast into the coop. They are not scared but happy then and make all kinds of talk them but it’s no louder than a dog or cat talking. People say that the hen “egg song” is loud that they supposedly sing when they have laid an egg to signal to the rooster to help escort them off the nest and distract predators away from it to prolong the success of the species. In other words they sing the song after they lay an egg. If the human has a rooster he should come get his hen or either distract any evident predators away from the area with the hen to keep them from getting the egg or knowing where the egg or nest is like a hawk so that his future generations will go on. For us humans who don’t own roosters it is our signal to collect the eggs. That’s as loud as the chickens get unless there is a predator(s) in their coop harming them or attempting to. Then it’s loud. Or a pecking order shenanigan going on. That’s the down low on chicken noise. Is there such a thing as quiet chickens? I would prefer if my neighbors did not know I have them. Thanks.
