My girls make the most noise when:
1) They just laid an egg
2) They want to lay an egg and someone else is in their "special nest box"
3) There is a cat lurking about
And number 5). My friend is laying an egg, my other friend is watching, and now I'm lonely.
My girls are usually very quiet, until one of the above happens. My girls live in a neighborhood with regular sized backyards (no acreage) and are close to our neighbors' windows as well. They actually enjoy my chickens' noises.
