Hi folks.. I was just reading the post on the quilt block swap. I really want to learn how to quilt, but I have no one to teach me. Could any of you suggest any books or websites, or just some good tips on getting started. I never learned how to sew. I've seen so many beautiful quilts and always wanted to be able to make them for my family. any help at all will be greatly appreciated.........thank you

Check with your local Library. You can also go to some fabric stores and ask if they have classes on quilting. These are the 2 best resources I sould think of. To bad you live so far away.

Exactly what I was going to type. Books from the library and sewing store classes.

Also check around for a quilters guild in your area. here they all meet at the public library once a month. Those ladies would love to teach you some beginning quilting.

Also - don't be afraid to try. Go to walmart or some other type store and buy a couple yards off the dollar per yard shelves. Cut and piece some blocks and play around with actually sewing them together - this will help perfect your cutting and stitching skills.

Don't forget to have fun!!

A great book for the beginner is Quilt in a Day Log Cabin Quilts by Eleanor Burns. It is what I learned on. The instructions are simple, clear and easy to follow.
It is also the book I give to those I have enabled, as I was enabled by this book.

It is on Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Make-Quilt-Da...r_1_25?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212070771&sr=1-25

Or the Quilt in a Day website

There is also a DVD on making a log cabin using the book. I love the DVDs

The Quilters NEws Netowrk is a great resource as well.

Happy Quilting!

Personally, this is my favorite quilting book:
http://www.amazon.com/Country-Livin...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212076165&sr=1-1

It's put out by Country living, and it's called Making and Displaying Quilts. It's got simply directions, and I've tried two different block types and a couple different binding methods, and I love them. It's easy to understand, and explains everything, from choosing your fabric (and thread), your stitch, to binding. I love it and it's kind of like my bible (I'm a beginner). My quilt blocks for this swap are from this book, but are simple and popular.

thank you all so much for your help! I am going to start checking out all the things suggested, and try to get started. I love quilts and I always wanted to make them for my family. If y'all can think of anything else that might help let me know and I'll post my progress. I hope that eventually i can do the quilt block swap with you all and make something beautiful

thanks,
Nancy

Pick up a few magazines, there are lots that are for beginners with detailed instructions for quick and easy quilts. Even simple quilts are beautiful and you'll feel so proud that you done it yourself. You'll find I'm sure that anyone how works with fabric (even in walmart craft dept) is more than willing to answer any questions and offer advice, lol, we just can't stop ourselves, it must be a kindred spirit thing.
