I read somewhere, can't remember where, that pilots are breaking the sound barrier more often now, while going at a slower speed. Something to do with the Earth's rotation, it's changing so pilots can go slower and still break the barrier. I'll try and find the article, it was interesting. I hope I'm remembering it correctly!
