Quotes and Thoughts for the Day

Quote: I'm wondering is there anything you can do to protect your flock?
We had the same situation here about 3 years ago. Horrible, horrible stuff…. Here is was mainly ostriches that were lost and 1000's of them. Closest was about 20 miles from our farm. Take care everyone and put in more effort with biosecurity, etc. That's all you can do, unfortunately.

I posted a question about avian flu back in March and got back some good info from other members. Here's the link if you'd like to read a bit (it's a short thread):

When it comes to stuff like this, I always wonder how much more of this is going on that we don't hear about?

Out here they wrote an article about raising biosecurity measures. They say most commercial farms will not allow their employees to own backyard flocks. It went on with a bunch of jibberish and basically blamed backyard flocks for the recent outbreak...yet they have 200,000chickens crammed into buildings under disgusting conditions and that is the unfortunate flock to contact it. Fortunately we're pretty isolated from other flocks, not to say it couldn't still happen, but if it did at least I wouldn't be spreading it to hundreds more.

I agree with you on that! Most of those big farms are inhumane and I'm betting unsanitary as well..

I figure their immune systems are already low by living in such conditions so it makes sense that they would be ill first. I just don't understand the need to put so many animals in one tiny spot. I see how much room my small flock uses in a day and I can't imagine how much room 200,000 would need. Even at a bare minimum.

Thanks Sumi good reading.

How come we the common folk can see the problem but "they" can't? and how can they say this is not a threat to humans? they won't know for a while and people keep consuming the poultry from these places. Most not even knowing there is an avian flu in the poultry in our country I don't think it's being reported like the measles was.Are ya'll hearing about it on world news? sorry I don't watch the news.
