Cry before you sleep is derived from an old African-American superstition:

Don't sing out 'fore Breakfast,
Don't sing 'fore you eat,
Or you'll cry out 'fore midnight,

This rhyme can be found in "Negro Folk Rhymes: Wise and Otherwise" (1922) by Thomas W. Talley.
