Yes!!!!! I believe this in an exact and literal sense. The story of humanity and (if you’re Christian) salvation is quite literally a great epic and legend; it just happens to be true. I think all of our stories and legends are echoes of that reality.
J. R. R. Tolkien expressed it well in his essay On Fairy Stories. If you search for a pdf version I think you can find it online. 🧐
