It isn't a matter of getting used to a different protein level. Protein content is determined by the age and type of birds and what you're trying to achieve. Growing game birds require much higher protein. For young chickens 18-24%, grown chickens not producing 15-16, Laying hens 16-17 and during and after molt I up the protein siginificantly and switch from layer to grower since they're not making eggs.

(off topic alert) Believe me I would love a local feed mill. I'm surprised there isn't one closer to me, but the nearest I could find is over an hour away and I don't have a truck to make the cost difference worth it.

I do buy my feeds 15 bags at a time from the local agway, which will deliver for free and is cheaper than TSC (and only a tad over the local-ish feed mill).

on topic: My TSC carries both Dumor and Purina. I think there is a SMALL price difference, but thankfully I have not bought either for months. I don't know where the local agway 'egg layer' comes from, but it doesn't resemble anything I've bought from Purina at all so I'm pretty sure that it isn't rebranded Purina.​

I do know the Dumor feed at my closest TSC has dropped $2 for 50 lbs. It's less now than the mix I now feed from a feed mill. I'm paying $15 for 50 lbs.

There is a local feed mill (FM Brown) & their price is better & their feed has animal protein. My only problem is they use chicken byproducts in their layer feed. The fish meal in their chick feed & the animal protein I am OK with. I sometimes use their 18% turkey & game bird breeder pellets. The rest of their feed is 16% and i like 18% or better. Everything else at every feed store is Purina.​

They WILL eat a different feed if you have to change. They won't sit there and starve until they die because the pellets sitting in front of them came out of a different colored bag. Layer feeds are pretty similar from one brand to another, so it probably won't have a huge effect on them.

Hi, yes, Cargill's Nutrena, manufactured in Louisisna, their Nature Wise chick starter , Crumbles and another product, recalled from that Plant.

Dumor is Purina,

I feed Nutrena, Layer Pellets, I am in Massachusetts, the product is not manufactured in Lousisiana, but, I am very, very concerned , as I feed Cargill Nutrena's Loyall Senior dog food,
I stopped using the Nutrena Pellets and Dog Food, chucked it, will return when, I am comfortable that it will not be in the recall.

My chickens actually love Purina Layeena, purchased a bag at TSC the other day, and I did lput four of our six dogs back on Nutro Senior Dog Food for a while mixed with some Pedigree

Two of the dogs get prescriptin foods, we have five dachsies and one black mouth cur.

We also have chicken and farm feeds made locally in Taunton, Massachusetts, Ventura Supply, has the manfuacturing plant next to the retail Store, ,
I have considered using the feed again. It does contain alfalfa preserved with ethoxoquin and also has fish meal in it.

Any input?????????

I was feeding Agway with great results.

My chickens need to be wormed, they have finished their heavy mout, any suggestions????
