My pet rabbit Bugsy dug out of his pen and normally when this happens Im able to put him back or he comes running for his pellets and goes back by himself but hes been out for 12 days now and he wont let me get more than 5 feet of him and he scurries off. I noticed his eye is swollen shut . He opened it and it was red and watery. I cant catch him and I feel so bad. I wish I never played with the idea of letting him have a pen to run around in. Its 20 by 20 feet and he was content with it for a long time till he learned to dig out this summer. Im expecting to find him dead in the yard one day because of his eye but I hope he just got poked by a twig or something and it clears up. Never ever again will I keep a rabbit in a pen. I really miss my sweet little guy. I will keep trying to catch or trap or lure him with food he likes. I guess Im writing this to vent and to warn others who let their bunnies run around that it is cute to put them in a pen and they are so happy but when they get ill or dig out it could be hard to catch them. He never ran from me before. UGH. Just kick me please :(

It's okey. He'll be all right. Even if he's not, it's not your fault. You thought you were doing what was best for him. Try catching him in a net. We had to catch our rabbit in a net before. Then feed him his favorite food. Be careful around him. If you think he's rabid, don't get around him. I hope he'll be o.k..

I caught him a few days ago :) I bought some eye antibiotic at Tractor supply and have been putting it in his eye three times a day and day 4 its looking so much better. I dont have to soak it with saline solution today to unstick the pus to get his eye open. Im so glad. He is so cute. I ordered a big rabbit hutch and pen on Amazon and I can lay down wire under it so he cant dig out. The bigger pen can be for supervised play only. Thanks for your kind response, I was feeling bad . It never ocurred to me my rabbit could get rabies. Thanks for mentioning that. To any rabbit owners out there...dont take a chance and not put wire on the ground of their run. They will eventually dig out and you will be sad.

My Bugsy died. That was a pretty nasty eye infection, it must have spread to his brain. I have wire under the rabbit pen and made a seperate run for my other rabbit with wire on the ground. I wont make the same mistake twice. Shes staying put unless Im outside with her to roam the big run.
