My sister has one female rabbit that is a year or two old. It is a standard size rabbit - I don't know what type it is - just black and white. She would like to get another female rabbit but wants a Netherland Dwarf. Could she put them in the same hutch together successfully? Her hutch measures about 2'x4' I think.

that would depend on the rabbits...sometimes there are no problems and other times it can be a war to the death...Our Netherland dwarfs are mean ,I would say, and I wouldn't try to put another rabbit in with them...the does and bucks even have a few minute long "war" when they are introduced for breeding purposes.....but that is just my opinion...If you were going to try to house them together I would definitely move both animals into a new home...just a eliminate the territorial bond the first rabbit would have with its old home....again...JMO

You would be better off getting a male and having him neutered before putting them in together. Also have your female spayed. Spayed/neutered female and male bonding goes the easiest but you can't just put them in together. You have to slowly bond them together.

Two unrelated adult female rabbits will not do well together in a confined space, especially if they weren't raised together. I have a colony. Introducing a new female when there are already females present is not always successful. In a colony, the babies who grow up with "Mamas" work great, but introducing an outsider is not easy nor is it always successful. And that is in a LARGE area, not a small confined space.

As far as spaying/altering a rabbit, I don't see the point, but that is just me. If you just want companions with no babies then raise them in different cages.

Thank you all for the information and insight. I have passed everything along to my sister and I think, in light of the responses, she is going to just stick with the one rabbit rather than take a chance on another not getting along.
