We had a duck disappear last night. When I went out at dusk tonight to close everyone up there was something big chasing the ducks and geese around the pen. My gander kept turning to challenge the animal. I ran out there screaming and it took off. I assume it was a big raccoon. My female goose appears to have a broken wing.
In the frenzy of trying to pen the ducks and geese into an old coop ( they aren't trained to go in) the gander attacked me, biting onto my pants he didn't break the skin but I had to get him by the neck to get him off me.
Now, because i'm pregnant I've gone down the rabbit hole of "What if". I know birds can't carry rabies but what if theoretically the raccoon bit the gander on the neck and then I grabbed it... nothing broke my skin and I washed my hands as soon as I came in.
What a night. I am ready to blast every predator on this property. Someone tell me I don't have rabies on top of everything else.

even if per chance it did have rabies unless there was an open cut on you or, it went in your eye or your mouth, you wouldn't get rabies. it doesn't go through your skin. :D

It's a fair question considering you are pregnant. An open wound on you would be the way it could be transmitted. I think you should be fine.
How is the duck?

I assume the duck is long dead. The goose is dragging the last section of her one wing as if it is broken. She seems to be getting around fine otherwise. By the time I got them penned it was totally dark and I didn't have a flashlight- decided to just give everyone a break until morning. I'll check her over first thing tomorrow.

I'm sorry I meant to ask about the goose, not the duck.

I hate reading these stories...

I was extremely paranoid about diseases when I was pregnant. I went to the ER for a spider bite. You can laugh, but I worked for the DOD at the time and we got alot of large crates that were shipped back to the US from overseas and we would get the craziest looking spiders I have ever seen come with them.

The goose *seems* ok this morning but she's really quiet. Her wing is tucked back up normally and there's not any blood.
I hate these stories too. I've lost a few birds this year all ready but have never caught an animal in the act before. I had no idea a raccoon would be so brazen. This morning one of the traps was drug about 15 feet across the run. We had a 25 lb raccoon here a couple of years back and I am afraid we have another huge, bold boar who is too big to fit into a trap.

No, I totally understand! I used to work in bakeries and when we were next to the produce departments... oh the things that would come in the fruit crates from south and central America would make you just shudder. Ick!
