Raccoon attack!!!

I’m not really sure if she is suffering though, because there is something about her that looks perky like our other chickens that weren’t attacked and she isn’t droopy. She holds her head up and makes little happy noises when we talk to her. I will have to wait and see. It looks hopeful that she might recover. She has been drinking lots of water and resting and so far she has no sign of infections. I hope she makes it.

I'm not sure about chickens, but with people, when bad wounds happen the body quickly numbs it so that you don't feel all the pain so when it wears off to try to keep shock or something like that down.

Do just about as you would do for a person - warm gentle water - keep it clean and away from other hens who might peck at her. Keep her warm and safe and cozy and I would offer her feed and water by hand.

A friend of mine started his flock with a young pullet he was given who had been badly attacked. She lost all vision in one eye and was temporarily blind until her other eye healed. We honestly thought she was brain damaged - she didn't seem to understand anything. But with hand feeding and watering for a bit - she quickly bounced back - and now she is a freaking awesome hen! They live in the country, she's had a few generations of babies, and those friends are the only ones I know who have never once lost any birds to predators despite their free ranging every day! This hen, with her one eye, keeps such close watch to any threat - even more so than their roosters!
