We had a roo go missing. He was roosted on top of the pen rather than inside the locked coop. There were three others up there with him. They got away without harm.

We just found a bunch of feathers around the pen. We follow a trail of feathers into the woods for quite awhile but then lost the trail. We never found the carcass.

What's your best guess?

RACOON! and it WILL be back for the others that roosted with your roo.

Better wait up tonight and get it!!

Thanks! We don't let them roost outside anymore...just the bantys which go way up in a tree!

We found a Havaheart trap at a feed store that was on clearance for $10. We have had it out for the last two nights (since the attack) but nothing yet!!

My DH is pretty determined to get the sucker.

I had a coon getting terrible amounts of birds from me this year and would not go in my live traps. I figured it for a real smart old coon. I finally lucked out and overheard strange bird noises late at night and caught him in the act of wiping out a small brooder of turkeys. To late to save that bunch, but he won't do it again.

coons go high up the tree as well, which in turn makes the chicken jump down then it is free game for the coon, i used to coon hunt, very smart animals for sure

Most likely is a coon. Don`t despair if it doesn`t show for 2-3 days. After a big meal, they usually sleep for a few days. May even take time to eat the whole chicken. Can`t say I`ve ever had a coon carry off a bird, but that could mean it`s a really big one. Try baiting your trap with a couple whole eggs. Saves the hassle of baiting the trap every day and predators are used to stealing eggs and usually go for the easy meal. I agree with the others that it will be back and may have a family. If you continue to have problems and the trap doesn`t work, PM me. I have a solution……Pop
