the human style latches appear untouched, these smart critters opened a slider door from the bottom, they had used their tiny feet to lift the wooden chicken door to get in, and got it wedged open on the way out. I have since added another latch from the inside of the coop, and am tickled to announce - no losses since. they used to free range, and coop themselves at night - but now they are escorted and secured when my sight isn't watching. the raccoons haven't touched the bait in the trap(that has been changed daily in gloves), and I am VERY hesitant to use poison, so for now, I am at a stalemate with my two raccoon situation. I just hope i don't forget to close the girls in at sunset every night - for the rest of their lives...yikes! maybe i just need a crazy rooster to solve this conundrum...thanks to everyone who has replied with advice.
