so can these guys live together in the same trees? I know some animals can live peacefully together but not sure about these two. I know they can live in the same general area but I'm talking in a specefic area?
I've had a family of raccoons living in the trees(about 20-25 ft from the coop) they were really active until about a week or two ago. I also have a very high prey german shepherd that has been on night patrol since the chickens have been outside. He can hear a pin drop and alerts me every time. I also have a very good one of a kind golden retriever that also has been alerting me.
So about 7:30pm the GSD starts running the fence line. I go out and look in the tree he is focused on and there is an oppossum. It was on the smaller size, leading me to believe that a family of oppossums has moved in to the trees. It threw me off because I was expecting to see a raccoon. I can always tell when something is active out there because in the morning the fence has the GSDs paw prints all over it--he jumps at the fence and not softly.
So did the raccoons move and the oppossums move in or do I now have 2 different families living out there?
I love wildlife but I love my chickens and ducks too. The electric fence is on and working-just tested it.
I've come to the conclusion that if you want to attract wildlife--just get chickens and everything will come. Before the chickens I saw an oppossum twice in 5 years and a raccoon maybe 3 times. I used to always see skunks-they would play in the front yard but I haven't saw any this year. I have smelled something similar to a skunk but the smell went away leaving me to think fox, mink or weasel.
I'm going to be screwed when my two boys are seniors and not able to alert me anymore.
