This ... plus they are super-adaptable to living around people. So, where for some animals neighborhoods push them away, for raccoons, the human population is a boost for them.

Set up a game camera and you will be surprised of all the wildlife you have around you. They have learned human behaviors and steer clear when needed. Coons and possums are just more bold than the rest of them.

I'll just got me a galvanized can with lid...will that be enough to keep them out of it...as well as mice?

You'll probably need to get a bungee or something else to keep the lid from being opened. I sat and watched a raccoon pry open the lid of my brand new galvanized can to get at the chicken food. It has since been dispatched.

Agree, metal trash cans, or an old chest freezer; anything other than metal is easy to chew. And bungee cords, if necessary.
Mine are in the coop, so locked down every night, which helps too.

Our property backs up to a creek and we have a hunting blind and game camera. So far we’ve got hogs, raccoons and bobcats.

I can promise ya got more than that. Animals use waterways as highways. We got a creek on our property and we get all kinds of animals that move around.
