Raccoons

This guy shoots them. My husband and I were very impressed with him. He told us a story about a woman who was feeding the pesky varmits and then complained that she had to pay to get rid of them, there were 88 total on her property!

I didn't drive twenty minutes around my drive way.

Unless its fish and game or a rehabber, what you were doing is in all likely hood illegal. Relocating coons is almost a mortal sin in my neck of the woods.

I am really surprised that no one has suggested that you relocate your hutch for a time. It isn't super huge, is it? Could you put it closer to the house or in a garage for a awhile?

Gosh, I AM a conflict avoidant thang, huh?

We have considered moving the girls, but unless we moved them into the garage or house everything I have heard about raccoons, they will find them. They will come right through a dog door if given the opportunity. We have plans for a new coop and run but won't be for another month or so. In building it we will make it as predator proof as we are able. If we have to bring them in at night we will. Update on the trapping, last night no raccoons! No evidence of them anywhere. So we are safe for another day!

On the note of the Fish and Wildlife, our guy told us that since 2006 they have been instructed to destroy all raccoons until told differently and if someone just relocates they will be fined and have their trapping license removed. We are in the state of Washington and I don't know if it is like that everywhere.

Again thank you for everyone's help and advise. When comes time for the coop building, I may be looking for more advise on constructing.

P.S. 22 RIFLE IS ESSENTIAL TO CHICKENS AS FEED OR WATER COYOTES ARE HARD TO CATCH IN A TRAP BUT CAN SHOOT FROM ABOUT 50 YARDS

Sounds like you've got it covered, between professional trapping and etc. Just one more thought: if the raccoons are jumping onto the top of the roof from the nearby fence, perhaps closely-spaced strands of barbed wire on top of the coop roof will help? One painful surprise and they may not try that again... Expecting my own raccoon battles to begin again someday (once they notice the chickens). I see them coming in and out of the storm drains on the street, so I know they're nearby.... Good luck! p.s. I hear raccoons are good eating! http://www.mcclatchydc.com/251/story/59566.html Quote from the article: "If you think about being green and eating organically, raccoon meat is the ultimate organic food." !!!
