I have a yellow d'uccle oe cross that goes broody every year and she is a GREAT momma, BUT if she hatches out a black chick she refuses to take care of it and the last time she hatched 2 brown red babies she was trying to kick them out of the nest the day they hatched! Luckily I had another hen broody! Anyone else have this problem or is my hen just odd?

Chickens can see just as good as humans they did a study on chickens to see how good they see they found out chickens are more likely to go up to pretty people then a ugly one soooo maybe she thinks their ugly or something lol

Mrs. Grumpy fits this. She loves the eggs, sitting on them, and keeping them warm; however, she is chick prejudice. She does not like chicks period and gets very angry when the chick dares to hatch out of her beautiful egg!
I have rescued a few helpless chicks from her to be adopted by one of the 4 good mommas. They love the chicks.

I read something about chickens recognizing facial features...remembering people and what not....guess that's how they know each other too. I guess I'm pretty, critters love me! xD
That's what I'm going to say from now on..."My chickens love me, so I must be pretty!" They won't get it...like most chicken related things I say.

My silkies have the same problem. They hate "normal" chickens with feathers and don't socialise with them at all

This is really interesting! I have noticed that my chickens who are similar in appearance (color) hang together more.

I have two white hens (different breeds) who are always together. My red Turken girls are never apart. On the other hand, I was combining two groups of bantams and have a dark Turken rooster who didn't do anything when a buff cochin was added but went crazy pecking and chasing her when a golden laced black cochin girl (who looked more like him) was added. It is a mystery!

when they were making the first planet of the apes movie, it was noticed that the actors in the ape suites, ate together, the chimps ate together and so on, even though they my not have been in the same scenes...you gravitate to what you familiar with.
