Saw two raccoons outside my garden fence two days ago ( I live in the city). I am new to chickens raising and this put me in a bit of panic. I went into higher gears, further barricaded my chicken coop, used longer staples to secure the fence around the run and nailed 2x1 wherever there is caging on the coop, considered a bb gun, racoon traps, electric fence, barbed wires, watch tower... Anyway, really went into a panic. Can I actually keep my chickens safe? Can I let them roam in the yard during the day? Should I keep them in the run (which is not as safe as the coop? Should I find them a new home? These chickens are not just our future egg layers, they are now part of the family!!!! Can't bear the idea of finding one mutilated by a raccoon or some other wild life!!!! Ideas anyone?

Were these raccoons sighted during daylight hours (not at dawn or dusk)? We have many raccoons here but I don't seem to have to worry about them too much. Raccoons should be a nighttime predator so if you have a secure coop the chickens should be safe.
If raccoons get chickens there is usually a breach in the coop or run that allows them in or lets them pull the chicken or parts of through the wire..
What I would worry about is raccoons out during the day. That can denote a sick raccoon, but if that is the case they may not be interested in eating. I would stay far from them if that is the case.

Raccoons were seen at dusk. never saw any during the day. Your reply is comforting though, thank you!!!! The coop, I believe is a Fort Knox!!! I will make sure to further secure the run, although chickens have no access to the run at night. During the day, they enjoy roaming around my fenced yard and I have yet to spot any dangers there! Be well!
