I have a barn made out of rough-cut telephone poles. While the creosote aroma still lingers a bit, it's quite beautiful wood. I also use some for my deack boards and just made an outhouse for my WI/MN hunting cabin.
My philosophy...anything in moderation. The ocassional use of telephone poles or RR ties isn't a big deal, but don't go overboard with it. Afterall, isn't creosote naturally occuring in the environmnet?
