My nephew has made me one and is getting ready to make me another composter out of white rain barrels.

Should I place them in the sun or shade, or does it matter?

These will be used for composting chicken manure and some kitchen/garden scraps. How do I do that?

in the sun definately speeds up the process up here in michigan. If you are going to be composting chicken manure, I'd add some green (grass clippings work good for bulking this up), some brown (paper bags, newspaper, leaves etc) and then any green or kitchen scraps. Personally, I avoid any meats or greases but thats personal choice here. Then turn it. If he made you a rain barrel, then I am guessing he made one easy to spin. In no time flat you will have nice compost that'll be perfect to top feed your garden and work into the soil at the end of the season!
