Rain water and chickens

My husband wants to get rain barrels and let the rainwater run off the roof of the house, into the barrel, and then use it to water the animals. I don't know about that. The garden and yard and bathing and cleaning, yeah. But don't the roof tiles have chemicals that would be washed into the water and poison the animals? Has anyone out there used roof run-off for this purpose?

If you have asfault shingles ya but I'm doing it and my fil has done it to fill well for years

If you have a metal roof, go for it. If not, save the water for other purposes. You can skip the rain barrels and channel the water directly into a rain garden.
