You don't need to fence them off completely. Just use some 4 foot long wood stakes and some bird netting. That's how I keep my flock out of the gardens. As for predators, just because you don't see them, doesn't mean that they aren't there. Dogs can go through chicken wire easily. And barking dogs behind a fence will not deter a predator.They free range 12+ hours a day so they would have access to the plants all day long. So HC wouldn't help. I told my wife we could plant the vegetables if I fenced in the raised beds but she vetoed that idea.
(We have 3 Bassett Hounds, a Black Lab, and a Pit Bull. There are no living predators on our property, just skeletons. Knock on wood).
