Raised leg scales and growths, what?

Hello,

After reading some comments here about chicken legs. I started looking closer at my birds, I have noticed a couple have what looks like raise scales and a couple birds have powdery white looking growths on their feet. Could it be mites???

Sound slike Scaley Leg Mites. Do a search on here for it and you will find many treatment options. They are very contagious for your chickens so its important to get them treated quickly.

Hello,

I have looked, it sounds difficult to get rid of. Some of the treatments suggest washing the legs and applying vasaline? It is cold here in Michigan, is that something I should be able to do now?

easy to get rid of...


wash with soap and water... wait until it dries... and spray with scarelet oil, or rub on some tee tree oil... i do it twice a week for two weeks, then cut down to once a week for about a month or more... it doesn't go away completely, or go back to normal... so don't be discouraged if it looks bad after...

i like to put tea tree oil on the roost every other time i clean the coop... i also hear DE works well when you put it in the coops, but i don't do that... don't know where to get DE...

i also wash all of my pillow cases sheets and blankets with a bit of tea tree oil too... i have a thing about bugs biting me and eating from my flesh...

You can usually get DE (you want to ask for Food Grade) from your local feedstore or healthfood store. Google for suppliers who will ship, but it may be expensive. DE is more for drying things out, but there are alot of different opions on its usefullness, so you want to do your research before spending the $.

Vaselline will not hurt your chickens in the winter- alot of people actually put it on their roosters combs and wattles to help keep them from freezing on very cold nights. It wont hurt them a bit. I think it is supposed to deprive the mites of oxygen and suffocate them to death.

I use DE liberally around my coop and in all nesting areas and dust bathing spots. I have very few problems with mites or any other creepy crawlies even though my flock free ranges a very large area.

the thought of it...being bitten in your own bed....ok...tea tree oil on the shopping list,pronto!

DE is useless as a treatment for an active infestation of bugs. It is a preventative only. Tea tree oil is fatal if ingested in even the most minute quantities by birds and small animals. I believe it is far too dangerous to use around pets/poultry of any variety. You can cover the roosts in just about any kind of oil and have the same effect without the dangers.

I washed the feet with a tea tree oil soap so I could rinse it, and then applied vasaline. I did it once a day for 2 weeks. Very much improved and never came back. This was in my last flock. This time, I check over birds I'm buying and just avoid it. I'm not sure where it comes from, but I have only ever had it in birds I got from less than ideal places.
