raised on a farm

been away a long time. will be retiring in next year and am considering small flock as hobby.
I am so happy to hear that you have made it to this point in your life! Trust me chicken are plenty bossy and do not like being let out of the coop late, you will never receive another positive performance review from them in your life unless you rear them from chicks, however they make up for their shortcomings by laying eggs and generally tolerating your company! I cannot think of any other animal I would rather be raising at this point in my life but there are so many I have yet to try. Be aware chicken are a gateway animal and you may require 10x the acreage you initially thought you needed.(not for the chicken but the goat/sheep/donkeys/geese/ducks too!)

I wholeheartedly welcome you into our community! Also here is a bit of homework to help you decide what kind of chickens you need going forward. Consider your climate, the birds purpose and a general job description for what you want plus the kind of fowl you want to keep for a lifetime!

Were I living in a far northern state and not married to a vegan I wold be so very interested in Chantecler, or La Fleche. or Crevecour, or Dorking. Another strong contender and affordable is Bresse if you want meat birds. The French rate them number #1 by flavor, and I have never eaten better food than I have in France. Austin, Tx comes in second as the Satelite Bar and Grill makes an awesome Champaign Salad that is excellent on the south side of town that is hands down the best salad I have ever had outside of France. Apologies, but there are not any Austin specific chicken breeds!
