Raising a chick in a developing country

You can also just use a 60W lamp light, or even just fill up a few quart jars of hot water arranged in a circle with a towel over the top so the chick can get between them to stay warm. Looks about a week old and 85F days sound just fine temp wise since it appears to acclimated to slightly lower temps already. No need for fancy dishes or water spouts. A coffee can with a hole in the side that the chick can reach into for food or water would work even so it wont fall in. With 50 deg nights, and I'm assuming "indoors" as in not drafty for now, the chick will probably only need extra heat for another month or so. A brooder can just be any bin too, like a cardboard box.

Adorable!!! I wish my roosters would be androgynous instead of roos if they can't be hens!

Even a small candle inside a metal coffee can, etc. would work to keep the chick warm. It will get as close, or far away as it needs to maintain comfort. Of course, I understand the fire risk and would put a rock or pebbles inside the can to keep it weighted down.

But I would NOT spend $60 for a light to keep one chick warm for another month or so. After it gets all it's feathers in...it will keep itself warm.

If you could find another chick...that would be IDEAL!!!

It seems to be doing ok. I am keeping it inside the bathroom (we have three! can you imagine), that doesn't work. I spent some time today making a room for it. Since it survived last night mostly in its box (I only took it out to sleep with me a few times just to make sure it is ok), I am re-thinking the warming idea. I made it a nest out of towels and one of my T-shirts (it is a foolish bird and thinks the t-shirt is me) and it seems to being staying warm. Not 90 degrees warm, but not shivering either.

I plan to ask around to borrow a lamp, and if you think a second chick will help, that will be done today. My son has been begging for one of his own and I read on here that chickens like to have a friend, so that would work perfectly.
