Raising a single chick..

A few days ago we just "acquired" a lone 5 day old chick from the feed store my daughter works at. It was injured in transport (hurt leg), and was hobbling & getting trampled by the other chicks. Your suggestions were AWESOME!! We created a similar environment for her - but only just added the mirror - that did the trick! Now if we could just get her to eat/drink without having to syringe feed her, we'll be set.

Thank you so much for posting this - it's given me hope :) (Oh! and she's walking without any problems now - just need to get her a little steadier, then may see if she's ready to join her siblings at the store - time will tell)

I know this question is a year old, but it was the first to pop up when I was searching for an answer. I have to say, if possible, get another chick! This has saved me! I had a very bad result to 12 incubated eggs, with one poor little deformed chick and one just great. I spent as much time as I could with the survivor, tucked inside my blouse(!), but hard to keep that up. Also after a week the peeping was driving me nuts! (really, incessant, like Japanese water torture!), so I drove some considerable distance to get another similar aged chick and popped it in. Now the silence is deafening, save for the occasional chirruping between the two. They look a bit strange, my original is a bantam and other gorgeous beastie is a Suffolk, so huge by comparison, but they are wonderful together. I did try the mirror, and it scared the living daylights out of her. She also had a couple of soft toys, but nothing, nothing is as good as the real thing! HTH

So glad you asked this. I was looking what to do for a lone chick. I hatched some eggs and only one so far out of 8 hatched it's been over 24 hours since the baby hatched. I am hoping one or 2 others will just be late but not likely. Time will tellI, I just put her in the brooder and the mirror seems to be helping her. I have a lady with some eggs in lockdown right now so I will have some friends for this one in a few days.
